MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Verizon IndyCar Series and it’s support races aren’t the only game in town this weekend.

Race fans who prefer ovals to road courses can head to Spitzer Motor Speedway on Sunday for the third race weekend at the recently revived half-mile oval on the city’s north side.

“It is a great weekend to be a racing fan in north central Ohio,” Spitzer Motor Speedway marketing director Dan Blaker said. “There is something for everyone, and not just here in Richland County. Hilltop Speedway (in Holmes County) is teaming up with Muskingum County Speedway for a $1,200-to-win late models race Friday and Wayne County Speedway will have its regular show Saturday.”

Spitzer will host modifieds, street stocks and hobby stock cars. The big draw Sunday is the Main Event Super Late Model Series.

“It is a very popular regional series,” Blaker said. “We’re going to have a lot of drivers here this weekend.”

The track’s first two race events this season both had holidays to contend with. The season opener was on Father’s Day weekend and the second show came on the Fourth of July weekend.

“We’ve had very good car counts and the fan support has been great,” Blaker said. “We had a huge turnout for our last event.”

Does Blaker and the Spitzer Motor Speedway team have reservations about contending with the Verizon IndyCar Series?

“We cater to different audiences,” Blaker said. “Some people prefer road courses and others would rather watch cars race around our oval.”

The pit gates open at noon Sunday with hot laps at 1 p.m. Qualifying begins at 3 p.m. and racing starts at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12. Children younger than 6 are permitted for free.
