“We honored five seniors tonight. They played real well, it was their night. It was all about them tonight,”said Lexington assistant coach, Sue Subich.
Seniors were honored at Tuesday nights varsity volleyball match between the Ashland Arrows and Lady Lex at 6 p.m. In the Lexington High School gym, just before the two teams squared off on court seniors took a bow on both sides on both sides.
Set after set, Lady Lex varsity Volleyball raised their level of play and stacked up a number of aces.
”We controlled the tempo by serving aggressively,” Lexington head coach Bobbi Weaver.
Leading the charge was Taylor Stoyko. Stoyko put down four aces and tallied 16 points for the team. Not far behind her, teammate Ellie Guth added five aces and contributed 14 points.
Weaver stated the team kept their upper hand by reading the court and countering, especially at the net. “Our hitters were able to beat the block,”she noted.
Lady Lex laid the foundation for victory with a 25-12 win in the first set and the trend continued into games two and three with scores 25-17 and 25-9.
With 12 kills and 11 digs, Mackenzie Weaver made her presence known as top hitter along with teammate Ellie Guth who lined up a total of 20 assists.
Balloons, flowers and smiles took center court after the first set to honor the five Lexington seniors. Ellie Guth, Morgan Stoyko, Alex Fitzpatrick, Makayla Thurman and Kaitlin Hunter along with their parents along side them each senior accepted recognition and thanks from their teammates in a walk across court.
“It was an emotional night. It was nice for the seniors to come out and play and to be honored,”said Weaver.
After the game parents, players and spectators gathered in the lobby to celebrate the seniors accomplishments with pictures, hugs and a celebratory cake.
