ASHLAND (UPDATED at 9:45 a.m.) — A man who threatened to harm himself prompting an overnight standoff with police has surrendered.
The standoff on Columbus Circle South started after a 911 call was made Wednesday evening.
According to a press release, the Ashland Police received a 911 call around 8:31 p.m. Wednesday with a report of a man who had barricaded himself in a home and was threatening to hurt himself.
Authorities said the man surrendered shortly after 9 a.m. without incident.
An Ashand County Sheriff’s representative said the situation started as a “domestic situation” involving the man in the home.
Police emphasized this is not a hostage situation, as has been reported in other media.
Authorities evacuated several homes near the standoff and have closed Columbus Circle South from Wilson Court to Mifflin Avenue, as well as Cooper Drive to Mifflin Avenue.
A temporary shelter was established at the Ashland City Schools Bus Garage for residents displaced by the event.
Ashland Special Response Team has been activated and assistance has been provided by officers of the Allied Special Operation Response Team from Mansfield, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office and the Ashland Fire Division. The Ashland County Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are on the scene as well.
