RIO DE JANEIRO — The U.S. Rugby Sevens mens team fell short of making the medal round, but that didn’t stop Ashland University grad Carlin Isles from making a splash with a hat trick in the team’s fourth match Wednesday.
After falling to top-seeded Fiji earlier in the day, Isles scored three tries as the Americans topped host Brazil again, 24-12.
“Any opportunities you get you have to take advantage of them,” Isles told USARugby.org post-match. “I did that, but the important thing was to have fun with my teammates.”
Isles showed why he is called “The Fastest Man in Rugby” on his third try, when the former Eagle ran the pill the length of the field, out-running the entire Brazil team for five points.
The U.S. will finish in ninth or 10th place, depending on the outcome of the Americans’ match against Spain at noon today.
