MANSFIELD, Ohio— Several awards were presented April 23 to students at The Ohio State University at Mansfield in recognition of their academic achievements.

Jeff Hensal, a mathematical and physical sciences major, was chosen to receive the David M. Scott Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created in memory of David M. Scott, Professor of Physics, who taught at Ohio State Mansfield from 1970 to 1986. The scholarship is given to a student with high academic standing in the fields of science or engineering.

Sociology major Talia Abedon received the Faculty-Staff Merit Scholarship. The award recognizes continuing students at Ohio State Mansfield who were chosen by a vote of faculty and teaching staff as most outstanding in classroom performance.

Two students who displayed excellence in both academic work and community service received the James R. McLeod Scholarship – Savanna-Rae Fahoum and Jacob Hamilton. The scholarship was created in memory of James R. McLeod, Associate Professor of Anthropology, who taught on this campus from 1986 to 1998.

Special Academic Awards were presented to two students who were judged to be outstanding by their instructors in the academic disciplines indicated. Psychology professor Amy Brunell presented the Outstanding Senior Psychology Major Award to Mark Matthews and Faith Wyzgoski, Chemistry Professor, presented the American Chemical Society Award to Jacob Gallion.

Students were also honored for their outstanding research and scholarship in the third annual campus Undergraduate Research Forum. Stephanie Brokaw, Suzanna Hammond, Mark Matthews, Desiree Schlund and Jacob Zahn completed either Denman research posters, conference posters, art, award-winning writing or senior theses.

Each year, outstanding students from each of several academic programs are chosen by the faculty and presented with a book; a copy of the book is also placed in the Bromfield Library in honor of the student. This year’s recipients include: Rachel Cronebach, Anthropology and Sociology; Rose Buckelew, Art, Music, and Theatre; Stephanie Brokaw, Biological Sciences; David Williams, Business & Economics; Frankie Munday, Education; Kaylor Montgomery, English; Stephaine Witherspoon, Geography, Philosophy, and Political Science; Aaron Hartman, History; Jeff Hensal, Mathematical and Physical Sciences; and Nick Deems, Psychology.

The Florence B. Allen Literary Competition Awards recognized outstanding works of poetry and fiction composed by Mansfield campus students. Cynthia Scodova received first place in poetry for “Shoveling Snow,” while Nick Gardner received second place for “When By Blood Becomes Blood Again.” Nick Gardner also received first place in non-fiction for “Vehicle Maintenance” while Stephaine Witherspoon placed second for “Shallow Draft,” as well as first place in fiction for “Tall Tales.” Steven Scaife placed second in fiction for “Current Events.”

Writing-Across-The-Curriculum Competition Awards went to Jacob Hamilton for “Propaganda in America: Analysis of Posters in War” and Avery McGrail for “Rape Culture: The Twenty-first Century Plague.” Essays and other writing projects, such as journals and lab reports were submitted by faculty for the award.

Avery McGrail also received the Annual Student Art Exhibition Award while Jacob Devlin was awarded the Student Exhibition Best of Photography Award.
