ASHLAND — If you’ve ever wondered what’s happening beneath the surface of your local creek — or why the health of our streams matters to everyone from anglers and paddlers to local businesses — Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has an invitation for you:

Grab a pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet and join the Conservation Chat: Water You Waiting For? on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Mohican State Park Visitor Center.

This hands-on Conservation Chat, presented in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will take participants beyond the shoreline and into the fascinating world of stream health, water quality, and watershed stewardship.

Attendees will literally get their feet wet as they explore stream life, learn how water quality is measured, and discover the telltale signs of a healthy aquatic ecosystem.

Along the way, they’ll gain a better understanding of local watershed challenges, the stressors impacting Ohio’s waterways, and practical steps they can take to help protect these valuable natural resources.

And the timing couldn’t be better. The Mohican River is one of Ohio’s designated Scenic Rivers, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and ecological significance.

Every year, thousands of visitors travel to the Mohican region to canoe, kayak, fish, camp, hike, and enjoy the area’s scenic landscapes. This river-based tourism economy supports local campgrounds, restaurants, lodging providers, and small businesses throughout Ashland County and the surrounding region.

Yet even one of Ohio’s most beloved waterways faces challenges. Excess nutrients, sediment runoff, habitat degradation, and other water quality concerns can impact stream health and aquatic life throughout the watershed.

Understanding these challenges — and the conservation practices that can address them — is essential to protecting both the river’s ecological health and the economic benefits it provides to local communities.

“This is not your typical sit-and-listen presentation,” said Jane Houin, Ashalnd SWCD director. “Participants will have the chance to get outside, explore a stream firsthand, and see how scientists and volunteers monitor water quality. It’s a fun way to connect with nature while learning how small actions can make a big impact.”

Participants will learn how biologists and water quality professionals evaluate stream= health by examining aquatic insects and other indicators that serve as nature’s report card for local waterways.

The program will also highlight conservation efforts occurring throughout the watershed, including habitat restoration, water quality monitoring, and voluntary conservation practices that help keep streams healthy for future generations.

In addition to learning about local water quality issues, attendees will discover opportunities to become part of the solution. Representatives from ODNR and Ashland SWCD will share information about volunteer water quality monitoring and stream assessment programs that allow community members to contribute valuable data while helping protect local waterways.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, paddling fan, angler, aspiring citizen scientist, or simply curious about the streams that flow through your community, this event offers a unique opportunity to learn, explore, and get involved.

This is a chance to get your hands dirty and your feet wet while learning more about the Mohican watershed, the challenges facing local streams, and the actions individuals can take to make a difference.

Participants may even discover a new way to volunteer and help safeguard one of Ohio’s most treasured natural resources.

Registration is free and open to the public. Participants can register online at wateryouwaitingfor.eventbrite.com or by calling Ashland SWCD Water Quality Specialist Zoey Dudte at 419-281-7645.

So, water you waiting for? Join Ashland SWCD on August 28 for an evening of stream exploration, water quality discovery, and hands-on conservation.

You might get your feet wet, but you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the waterways = that connect our communities, support local wildlife, and help power Ashland County’s outdoor recreation economy.

Ashland SWCD works with landowners, farmers, businesses and community partners to protect and improve Ashland County’s soil, water and natural resources through education, technical assistance and conservation leadership.

Each month, the district hosts a Conservation Chat on different conservation topics relevant to the local community. A list of upcoming events can be found at ashalndswcd.com.
