MANSFIELD, Ohio–Although the sky was painted gray, Matt Hamilton, race coach at Snow Trails, couldn’t have asked for better weather Saturday when he and his son hit the slopes. “These are ideal conditions,” he said, “not too hot, and not too cold.”

He and his five-year-old son, Wyatt, were among numerous people who ventured out to Snow Trails to partake in some family fun.

With his camera ready, Hamilton followed closely behind his son during the giant slalom race. Slalom races involve skiing between poles or gates. Wyatt received instruction and words of encouragement from his dad as he crossed the finish line.

Hamilton said he enjoys the time he gets to spend with his child out on the slopes, noting “It’s always a lot of fun.”

The Heckert family also enjoyed their time together Saturday. Lisa Heckert cheered on her 11-year-old son, Douglas, as he competed in the giant slalom race, and her husband, Chris, stood atop the hill to coach the skiers.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the resort at the terrain parks, Tyler Yost and his friends practiced some tricks. Snow Trails has four terrain parks: Training Park, Terrainasaurus Park, Alpine Terrain Park, and The Woods Terrain Park.

A Cleveland resident, Yost said he enjoys coming out to Snow Trails and believes it to be one of the best winter resorts in the state.

More fun was expected to continue into the evening as Snow Trails held its mid-season party.

Scott Crislip, general manager at Snow Trails, enticed, “We know how to throw a good party.” He said the evening would include music–both deejay and live–as well as fireworks.

Additionally, the Woods Park Crew set up a unique terrain park at the base of Mt. Mansfield for skiers and snowboarders. Crislip called it “Urban Park.”

He said Saturdays typically draw a large crowd, but he anticipated that a number of extra folks would turn up Saturday to partake in the festivities.

And with this just being the halfway mark of their season, he noted that people can anticipate plenty of other fun events in the future, including the Big Air Competition on Feb. 7 and the 54th Annual Ski Carnival on Feb. 21 and 22.
