Crestview High School celebrated Crestview Community Day on Saturday. Just off St. Rt. 96 a few miles west of Olivesburg, the school grounds were full of athletic events and family activities in an effort to promote the school, bring the community together and raise funds.
A 5K race kicked off the day’s activities at 5 p.m. A variety of activities kept Community Day busy from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Members of the community could choose from carnival games, inflatables, face painting as well as arts and crafts. A spirit wear booth and concession stand was also available to attendees.
Athletic Director Tim Kuhn said the event, put on by the Crestview Athletic Boosters, is designed bring the rural community bordering Ashland and Richland counties together for a day.
“We don’t have a town and it’s important for (the community) to know that this is the center of our community,” said Kuhn. “We want to give them an opportunity to come out see our athletes, see our boosters, see what we’re doing … and get more people involved.”
The school hosted a number of athletic contests throughout the day. The volleyball team took on Mansfield Christian at 10 a.m. and swept their opponents in 3 straight sets to win the match. The girls soccer team followed up with a match against St. Peter’s at 11 a.m. St. Peter’s won that match, 2-1. The football field hosted the junior varsity squad, junior high and PeeWee teams from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Kuhn also noted that the event acts as a fundraiser for Crestview. As one of their larger fundraisers, Kuhn said the event aims to raise around $10,000 – $15,000 for the Crestview Athletic Boosters. Adding to that effort this year was Donley Ford of Ashland.
“We enjoy and pride ourselves in giving back to the community as much as we can,“ said Judi Dickinson, marketing manager with Donley. She explained that for each individual that took a test drive of one of the Ford vehicles available, Ford will donate $20 per test drive to the school up to an amount of $6,000 through their Drive 4UR School program.
