5K season is in full swing but and one this weekend will purposefully include obstacles, mud and beer. Or have you trekking steep acsents and descents through woods and ski slopes. The Snow Trails Hero Challenge decided to up the ante with their third-annual 5K on June 21 that meanders through their hilly 80-acre property. And at the end of the course, participants are promised beer, BBQ and DJ’d music.

The proceeds from the event will support a local fire fighter named Joe Tadijanac. The Bellville firefighter lost both legs above the knee after fighting a fire nearly two years ago. Last year’s Hero Challenge event raised enough money to send Tadijanac to a boot camp devoted to training individuals in the use of prosthetic limbs.

The course is designed for the general public’s consumption, but “it’s really what you make of it,” said Marketing Manager Nate Wolleson. Individuals may choose to walk, run or race if they choose. Ohio Race Day will be there to place chips on participants to receive accurate race times.

“We wanted to make something challenging but not overly intimidating. It’s like an adult playground, really,” added Wolleson. He pointed out that the Hero Challenge has over 30 natural and constructed obstacle courses including mud crawls, multiple wall climbs, lumber jack logs, and a tube bridge. Their will also be a slip-n-slide.

According to Wolleson, one of the biggest requests from last year was “more mud.” So this year, the team out at Snow Trails made sure to include more chances to get soaked in mud.

For those individuals seeking something a little more physically taxing, a “Fit-Pit” is available. The course includes four stations where participants will partake in different timed workouts. Then, the individual or team of four will run the 5K course. The team of four who has the best times and highest Fit-Pit scores wins a $300 cash prize.

The event will send out multiple waves of contestants throughout the day with the first starting at 9:15 a.m. The first Fit-Pit starts at 8:30 a.m. Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. For a more detailed outline for times and prices for registration, visit the event website.
