Mansfield – C. Maxine Nickell, 97, of Mansfield, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2014 at her home. She was born April 17, 1917 in Bellefontaine, Ohio to the late Carrie (Smith) and Gary Dodds. Maxine grew up in Harper, Ohio and graduated from Cardington High School and recently attended her 75th Class Reunion.

She retired from J.C. Penney as the catalog manager. Maxine was a sweet lady with the best sense of humor. Her intelligence was evident in conversations with her and she was very generous in donating her time to various organizations including the Salvation Army, Richland Pregnancy Services and American Red Cross.

Maxine enjoyed traveling and, while on vacation in North Carolina at the age of 91, she caught and reeled in a shark. She had an adventurous spirit and was go-carting at the age of 89. Gardening, fishing, crafting, crocheting and reading on her Kindle and playing games were favorite activities.

Maxine was a member of Ontario Christian Fellowship where she was loved and appreciated by many. Her bright, smiling face was a welcome sight each Sunday morning. Previously, she was a long-time member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Galion where she served as Lay Minister and MYF advisor and often delivered homemade soup to shut-in parishioners.

She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Campbell-Bloom of Mansfield; two sons, Robert Nickell (Sue Jobe) of PA and David Nickell of Mount Vernon; four grandsons, Marc (Laura), Jay (Sherri), Rob and Bill; six granddaughters, Katie, Barb (Ron), Vanessa (Tony), Bobbi, Kim (Perry) and Richelle; fourteen great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; a brother, Keith Dodds of Marion; and a host of nieces, nephews and other dear relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert T. Nickell, whom she married in 1938; three brothers, Robert, Carol and Gary; and a sister, Violet.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, 2014 in the chapel of Ontario Christian Fellowship, 636 S. Lexington-Springmill Road followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Kim Maurer will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral Hospice, Ontario Christian Fellowship or a charity of the donor’s choice.
