MANSFIELD — The United Way of Richland County is well on its way to reaching its 2018-2019 goal.
The agency announced Friday it has already raised 79 percent of its $1,425,000 goal during its mid-campaign luncheon at the The Ohio State University’s Mansfield branch.
“I’m thrilled to tell you we are making great progres s… Compared to last year at the same point in time, there’s about $400 approximately difference in the amounts. We were just about $400 ahead last year,” said Mark Masters, campaign chair and president of Mechanics Bank. “We have great reason to be hopeful.”
Last year’s goal was $1.4 million, and it was successfully reached.
The funds raised by the campaign benefit more than 50 programs in approximately 24 local, nonprofit agencies in the areas of health, family, emergency and youth development services.
Friday’s event also recognized two individuals who were especially helpful throughout the process.
Keith Strickler of Ontario Local Schools and Beth Malaska of Richland Bank were named the United Way of Richland County’s 2019 “hidden heroes” for their fundraising efforts. Strickler helped Ontario sixth graders turn scrap wood into artwork that was sold for $20 apiece at the school. Malaska was recognized for helping fellow employees find their reason to donate.
“What she does is she talks with all of our new hires and makes sure that they are aware of the United Way, and the biggest thing she does is challenge them to find their why. The why should you give, and what are you passionate about?” Richland Bank president Chris Hiner said.
The campaign concludes Friday, Feb. 22 with the annual Dash to the Goal. The event includes a life-sized version of Monopoly, called Richandopoly at the Richland Mall and other events throughout the day at Graham Auto Mall.
“We truly couldn’t do what we do without you,” said Dan Yarn, United Way of Richland County’s executive director.
