A rail car was found derailed Wednesday morning in Mansfield near the intersection of Longview Ave. and state Route 545. A rail inspector from Ashland Railway called General Manager Mike Mosley at 10 a.m. to report the incident.

Mosely then called Ashland Railway Managing Director Don Cleland who arrived at the scene. According to Cleland, the cause is undetermined. No personnel or staff member was present at the scene when the accident was reported, and there were no apparent injuries.

“This does not happen very often,” said Cleland. “We are undetermined as to why the car is moved at this time. The car was not under direct operation of any employees.”

The car carried pellet plastic resin from an undisclosed company. The cargo spilled, but according to Cleland the material is not hazardous in any way.

Ashland Railway owns the tracks of the derailed car. They do not own the train and did not release the company owning the train and product found within. Ashland Railway works with several clients, some from the Gulf of Mexico. According to Cleland, damage could be upwards to $250,000 and clean up could take several days. A separate company will need to be hired for the removal of the car.
