WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ohio lawmakers sounded off Friday on the U.S. launched air strikes Thursday night against the Syrian air base.
President Donald Trump said the strikes were in response to a chemical attack that killed more than 80 civilians earlier this week.
“Last night’s missile strike appears to be a proportional response for Assad’s brutal killing of innocent civilians, but there are still unanswered questions, including how the strike will impact American forces on the ground fighting ISIS and what this means for long-term military engagement in Syria,” said U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Mansfield Senior graduate. “President Trump needs to come up with a strategy to resolve the Syrian conflict, share his plans with the American people and win their support before taking further action.
“Secretary Tillerson is scheduled to travel to Moscow next week, and he and President Trump need to use this Administration’s close ties with Russia to pressure President Putin to step up and curtail further indiscriminate killing of Syrian civilians.”
Rep. Pat Tiberi also chimed in, releasing the following statement:
“The Assad regime’s chemical attack on the Syrian people, including innocent children, was barbaric and immoral. President Trump responded with decisive and appropriate action through targeted air strikes directed at the source of these horrific attacks. Moving forward, it is important that the administration works with Congress to form a comprehensive strategy aimed at bringing stability to Syria and the region.”
