BELLVILLE: Gladys Oyster loved the village of Bellville. She loved its people and its activities – it was the center of her comfort zone. Though not one for personal attention, Gladys was compassionate and supportive of her community
The town has lost a lifelong resident, as Gladys, formerly of Myers Avenue, passed away Saturday morning March 11, 2017 in Sunrise of Worthington. She was 88.
Born Gladys Marie Myers August 1, 1928 in Galion, to Arthur and Hazel (Swank) Myers, she moved to Bellville as a young girl to graduate from Bellville High School in 1946.
In August of that year she married Clarence R. Oyster, and they were blessed with three children. Gladys set to raising the children and homemaking. She was an active member of Bellville Presbyterian Church and Ruth Chapter #17 Order of Eastern Star.
Vacation was time for a road trip. By car, she and Clarence visited most of the U.S., focusing on visiting family and seeing National Parks. A lifelong baseball fan, she was a diehard Cleveland Indians fan. Gladys was passionate about her family and politics, and her compassion extended to dogs – seemed she always had a canine companion: a Toy Fox Terrier, through the years.
She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Bruce) Fluty of Columbus; her son Robert M. Oyster of Longwood, FL; daughter-in-law Linda Winsett of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren; Renae (Doug) Knuth and Tracie (Dave) Ambler all of Columbus; step grandchildren April (Matt) Purper of New Albany, Adam (Nicole) Fluty of Westerville; and Jade Yezzi of Philadelphia; seven great grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary Louise Myers of Loveland, CO, Lois Oyster of Bellville and Betty Hammond of Bellville; numerous nieces and nephews; and her Rat Terrier Heidi.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence on January 22, 1999; her son William E. Oyster; brothers James, Robert, and Charles Myers; and a sister Betty Shade.
The Oyster family will receive friends Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. Celebrant Dave Roberts will officiate. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
