Dixie Lee Bates, age 78, of Mansfield, OH, passed away in Ashland, OH on Thursday, September 17, 2026. She was born January 15, 1948, in Mansfield, OH to Raymond and Betty (Hassinger) Hart.
Dixie shared a very special bond with her mother, Betty, and devoted her time to caring for her. She was always willing to give of herself to those in need. Her generous heart, kindness, and compassion touched the lives of many.
Dixie will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the care she showed to others, and the warmth she brought to the lives of those who knew and loved her.
Dixie loved shopping and visiting garage sales, and crocheting was one of her favorite pastimes. She lovingly made beautiful afghans for family and friends.
She worked for the Mansfield Police Department, Mansfield Fire Department, and Tappan Stove Company before working at Buckeye Bakery. She was a hardworking and caring woman who found joy in the simple things in life.
She is survived by her children: James (Michelle) Dillon, Jeffery (Michelle) Dillon, and Jennifer (Randy Nelson) Dillon; brother, Gene (Kit) Hart; grandchildren: Sara (Chris Melcher) Dillon, Zach (Hailey Floom) Dillon, AJ Dillon, Anna (Phil) Mesker, Patrick (Shannon) Dillon, Adam Dillon, and Morgan Dillon; great grandchildren: Ada Melcher, Lydia Mesker, Lucy Mesker, and Boniface Mesker, her beloved Cavapoo, Addie; and many cherished family and friends.
Dixie was preceded in death by her husband, James Bates; and her parents.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield, OH 44902. Dixie will be laid to rest during a private family committal at Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be offered to Brethren Care Village, 2140 Center St, Ashland, OH 44805.
