Matthew Herbst, age 62, died on March 28th 2026 after a long battle with multiple cancers.

Matt graduated from the Madison Comprehensive High School in 1982. After 1 year in college, he entered the Army with the 101st Airbourne and saw active duty in Iraq’s Desert Storm. He was a helicopter mechanic and had hoped for a military career. Due to an injury, he left the service and returned to finish his college degree. He received a BS in Math Education from the Ohio Dominican University in 1996. He then worked for Bob Boyd and LGH (Lifting Gear Hire).

He is survived by his former wife Laura Handshey and his children Alexis Herbst of Heath Ohio and Alex Handshey of Mt. Perry Ohio. In addition, he is survived by sisters: Kathy of Cincinnati, Patti (John) Elswick of Mansfield and Paula (Kerry) Drake of Canal Winchester and brothers: John of Alexandria, Terry (Kelly) of Columbus, and Joe of Mansfield.

His is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elaine Herbst and his sisters Diane (Denny) Davis of Columbus and Suzanne Herbst McReynolds of Mansfield.
