CANTON — The Ontario swim team will be busy on Friday.
The Warriors sent five relay teams and four individuals to the ‘A’ finals during Thursday’s Division II state tournament preliminaries at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
The top eight finishers in each event advanced to the ‘A’ final and will swim for state championships Friday afternoon. The next eight finishers qualified for the ‘B’ final.
Siblings Mirielle and Grantham Trumpower each qualified to the ‘A’ final in two individual events and as members of two relay teams.
Mirielle finished second in the prelims in both the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke. She finished in 54.99 seconds in the fly and 57.15 seconds in the back.
Grantham was second in the 50 free (20.85) and third in the 100 free (45.83).
Colten Montgomery finished fourth in the 100 back (51.58), while Carson Smith was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.73).
Both Montgomery and Smith just missed out on the ‘A’ final in their other individual events. Montgomery was 10th in the 100 fly (51.84) and Smith was ninth in the 200 individual medley (1:59.09).
Jackson Świątek will swim in the ‘B’ finals in both of his individual events. He was 11th in the 200 IM (1:59.48) and 10th in the 100 back (53.56).
Jack Rietschlin also qualified for the ‘B’ final in a pair of individual events. He tied for 14th in the 100 back (54.49) and finished 16th in the 500 free (4:54.70).
Connor Robinson advanced to the ‘B’ final in the 100 breaststroke. The freshman was 16th in 1:00.06.
Tessa Crum reached the ‘B’ final in the 50 free. She finished in 24.90.
Relay teams shine
All three of Ontario’s boys relay teams will swim for state championships Friday.
The 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay teams turned in the top times in the prelims and will be seeded first in the finals.
The 200 medley crew of Montgomery, Smith, Trumpower and Owen Walter finished in 1:34.15.
Walter, Rietschlin, Montgomery and Trumpower teamed up to win the 200 free relay in 1:25.28.
The 400 free relay team of Walter, Swiatek, Smith and Rietschlin had the second-fastest time in the prelims (3:12.40).
The girls 200 and 400 relay teams both reached the ‘A’ final.
Sasha Bulakovsk, Joie Simmering, Trumpower and Crum teamed up to finish third in the 200 free relay (1:38.45).
The 400 team of Simmering, Ava Zehe, Trumpower and Crum was fourth in 3:37.27.
Lex swimmers advance
Lexington’s Cooper Watters will swim in the ‘A’ final in both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Watters finished sixth in the 200 IM (1:55.67) and seventh in the 500 free (4:47.57).
Lex’s Kayla Caldwell qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 500 free. She finished 12th in 5:24.00.
Lexington’s girls 200 medley relay team of Caldwell, Katya Prykhodko, Maggie Nolan and Emily Woods finished 16th in 1:53.65 to reach the ‘B’ final.
Ezra Mueller was 17th in Division II boys diving with 227.20 points.
Strong sprinters
Clear Fork’s Estella Gandee reached the ‘B’ final in the 50 free. She finished 16th in 24.93.
Loudonville’s Cooper Sage also qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 50 free. He was 16th in 22.02.
