Vernon Eugene Henderson, 92, of Crestline, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, at Mill Creek Nursing Home in Galion, OH.
Vernon was born in Manchester, OH on April 3, 1933, to the late Richard and Dollie (Lewis) Henderson. He married Elaine Workman on September 30, 2000, and she survives him.
A proud graduate of Crestline High School, Class of 1951, Vernon served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. He worked and retired from General Motors, as an Employment Manager and served as the Vice President of GM National Salary Retirees.
Vernon was not only committed to his professional life but also to his community. He served two terms as the Mayor of Crestline, actively engaging in local politics as a member of the Crawford County Republican Central Committee. He was also a board member of the Crestline Historical Society, and a cherished member of the Lions Club and VFW Post 2920, both of Crestline.
A member of the Life Point Community Church in Plymouth, Ohio, Vernon was deeply involved in church activities and loved participating in his children’s sporting events, where his passion for mentorship and support resonated with both players and families alike. Vernon was an avid football fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Elaine Henderson; his children Edward (Sarah) Henderson, Laura Henderson, and Brad (Jaimie Kelly) Henderson; his stepchildren; Michael (Kelly) Wheeler, Mark (Carol LiVolsi) Wheeler, Laura (Kevin) Bullock, his grandchildren; Jennifer, Miah, Madaline, Noelle, Kylie, Darien, Jessica, Christopher, Timothy, Sarah, Nicholas, and Lily, numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Vernon is preceded in death by his son, Kyle Henderson, his grandsons, Zachary Bullock and Dallas Fritz, his sisters, Wynona Price and Judy Barker, and his brother, Ray Henderson.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of The Carlisle Place in Bucyrus, and to Mill Creek Nursing Home, for their exceptional care.
Friends may call on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 11:00 AM until the time of funeral services at 1:00 PM, at the Gompf Funeral Service – Crestline Chapel, 223 West Main Street., Crestline. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery – Crestline, where military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy and the Galion-Crestline Veteran’s Military Funeral Detail.
