SHELBY — Lawmakers in Shelby will not meet Monday night.

Slated as Shelby City Council’s first gathering of 2026, the meeting was cancelled on Monday afternoon. Stacey Gunder, an administrative assistant for the city, emailed the public notice around 3:15 p.m.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances in an environment of active communicable illnesses, the Shelby City Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. this evening (Monday) is cancelled,” the notice said.

No rescheduled meeting date was announced in the notice. The notice included no further details regarding the cancellation.

Shelby City Council meets regularly on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings take place at the Shelby Justice Center, 29 Mack Ave.

According to the Shelby City Health Department website, a communicable disease is “an infection that spreads from person to person.”

Some diseases must be reported to the local health department, according to the health department website and per Ohio law.

The city’s website classifies “reportable diseases” as “those of a public health concern because of their severity, potential to spread to other people, and cause for public health concern.”

According to the Shelby City Health Department, communicable diseases can be reported 24 hours per day, seven days per week via its Health Department Hotline at 419-342-5226. Calls received after regular business hours will be transferred to the Shelby Police Department — which will notify the appropriate health department personnel.
