ONTARIO — Nearly thirty families gathered at the Ontario Center Mall on Nov. 22 for Chess Day at the Mall, a free community event organized by Chess Bus, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to high-quality chess programming throughout the region.
The event featured interactive instruction, guided play, and an Arena-style rapid tournament.
The Arena competition was won by Todd Wynn of Mansfield, who topped a strong field of local players.
The event was led by Chess Bus CEO and head coach FM Carl Boor, fresh off his return from the Kings Island Open in Blue Ash, where he tied for 1st place in the state’s largest annual chess tournament.
Boor said the weekend’s turnout reinforced his goal of building a vibrant and sustainable chess culture in the community.
“Chess is for everyone,” Boor said. “Seeing so many families come together at the mall shows the hunger for positive, community-building activities.
“We want to bring more of this energy to schools, libraries, and neighborhoods across the county.”
Kelly Boor, Chess Bus coach, co-founder, and rapidly rising competitive player, helped run the day’s activities.
After only 1.5 years of play, Kelly is currently the #1-ranked woman in the entire country for USCF online rapid chess. She has become a strong advocate for bringing more girls and women into the game, noting how deeply underrepresented they remain in the chess world.
“If young women see someone like them succeeding, it opens the door,” she said. “I want them to know they belong in this game.”
Chess Bus also extended its appreciation to the Ontario Center Mall management for providing a warm, supportive venue for this growing community tradition.
Their partnership makes it possible for Chess Bus to offer monthly Chess Day at the Mall events, with the next event scheduled for Dec. 20.
“The Ontario Center has been incredibly supportive,” the organization said. “Their willingness to open their doors to community programs like this helps bring families together and strengthens our local culture.”
Chess Bus plans to continue hosting community chess days, instructional classes, and local tournaments, and is actively seeking partnerships with local businesses, civic leaders, and educational institutions to expand its reach.
Chess Bus is a 501(c)(3) charity, and all donations support youth programs, equipment, and outreach events.
