MANSFIELD — A Lexington High School graduate has been hired to lead the City of Mansfield Parks and Recreation Department.

Michael “Mike” Woogerd began his new role on Monday, according to Public Works Director Louis Andres, who said the choice came from a “highly qualified pool of candidates.”

After graduating from Lexington, Woogerd earned a bachelor of science degree in natural resource management and administration from The Ohio State University School of Environmental and Natural Resources, according to Andres.

His professional experience includes work with Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks, where he coordinated maintenance operations, naturalist programs and volunteer engagement, Andres said.

Woogerd attended the Great Lakes Park Training Institute in 2024 and brings hands-on expertise in playground inspections, hiking trail construction and maintenance, carpentry, forestry and equipment upkeep, according to Andres.

He is an an active member of the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association, the public works director said.

“Mike Woogerd brings a strong blend of local roots, professional experience, and a deep passion for parks and natural spaces,” Andres said.

“We’re excited to welcome him to the team and look forward to the leadership and fresh perspective he’ll bring to Mansfield Parks.

“We look forward to the leadership and passion Mike will bring to Mansfield Parks as we continue to enhance recreational spaces for our community,” Andres said.

Woogerd replaces Mark Abrams, who retired in August after 30 years with the city, including the last decade running the parks department.
