SHELBY — Shelby is No. 1 across the board.
The Whippets are tops in Ohio’s Division IV AP football poll, and the MaxPreps state poll. But coach Rob Mahaney’s squad is far more interested in the computer poll, which determines playoff seeding.
They’re doing just fine there, too.
The Whippets are No. 1 in Division IV, Region 14 with 19.5429 points after pounding Clear Fork 52-14 last week. Shelby is 7-0 overall, 4-0 and on the prowl for a third consecutive Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference title heading into Friday night’s game at Ontario (4-3, 2-2).
Remember, the top 12 schools in each region in the final report on Oct. 26 qualify for the playoffs. The top four seeds get a first-round bye.
Region 14 is where the action is for teams from our neck of the woods. Galion (6-1, 3-1) has lost only to Shelby in a tough, 45-34 affair and sits third with 12.7857 points. The 10th-ranked Tigers, 4th in MaxPreps, will host River Valley (2-4, 1-2) this weekend.
Clear Fork (5-2, 3-1) will try to rebound Fridad night at home against Highland (2-4). The Colts are ranked 20th by AP, 11th by MaxPreps, and have 9.6357 points while sitting in 5th place in Region 14.
Lexington checks in at 10th in both the Division III AP and MaxPreps polls. The Minutemen are coming off arguably their best showing of the season, a 41-7 victory at West Holmes.
Lexington coach Andrew Saris has seen his team soar to No. 4 in Region 10 with 12.6643 points. The Minutemen are 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference heading into Friday night’s home date with New Philadelphia.
Lex remains on course for a monumental showdown against undefeated Ashland in the regular-season finale, which will have league championship and postseason implications.
Cinderella’s slipper continues to fit Crestline. The Bulldogs have struggled mightily for years, but own a 5-2 record this season and are an astounding 7th in Division VII, Region 27 with 6.2929 points.
The Bulldogs are home against a solid Connotton Valley (5-2) squad on Friday night.
Crestview earned a key, 30-21 win over nemesis Norwalk St. Paul on Friday night to improve to 5-2 overall, 4-0 in the Firelands Conference.
That win puts the Cougars to 12th in Division VI, Region 23 with 7.4643 points. Coach Steve Haverdill’s squad travels to Western Reserve (5-2, 3-1) Friday night in a huge encounter with a bevy of playoff points and conference leadership implications.
Finally, Colonel Crawford holds down the third-place spot with 11.7286 points, also in Division VI, Region 23. The undefeated Eagles (7-0 overall, 4-0 in the Northern 10) are in a league showdown at Carey (4-3, 4-0) this week in a battle among league leaders.
The Eagles are ranked fifth in AP, sixth in MaxPreps after last week’s 31-0 shutout of Seneca East.
