MANSFIELD — Checkmate, Zac Hiser.
Episode 68 of News Man Weekly is the “checkmate edition,” which features the first live sporting event in the podcast’s history.
Hiser, the show’s executive producer, takes on local chess master Carl Boor in an actual match as videographer Hayden Gray records the “competition” for the Richland Source YouTube channel.
Yes, live sports makes its debut on this week’s show. Check the YouTube link below to watch all the “action.”
Not surprisingly, the match ends rather quickly even as Boor answers questions from Richland Source Deputy Managing Editor Carl Hunnell, not distracted in the least as he rolls past his opponent.
It’s all about letting you know Saturday, Oct. 11, is National Chess Day and Boor’s Chess Bus organization has upcoming events at Sterkel Community Park for All and The Ontario Center, formerly the Richland Mall.

The Mansfield-based player and founder of The Chess Bus shares how he fell in love with the game, what it takes to reach master status and why chess still matters in the age of video games and AI.
Before the match begins, the Richland Source crew opened with the usual mix of sports heartbreak, newsroom chaos and local headlines.
Hunnell, Hiser and Gray talk about Cleveland’s roller-coaster weekend — from the Guardians’ playoff exit to yet another Browns gut punch — before catching up on family life, football byes, and a few folks who’ve landed on the News Man Weekly’s naughty list.
Hunnell also runs through the week’s top local stories, including the opening of Mansfield’s new multi-use bike trail connector and tunnel, county leaders weighing property tax relief and the latest developments in downtown revitalization through development of the Mansfield Municipal Parking lot.
