MANSFIELD — Unity was the theme Saturday evening at Mansfield’s Liberty Park.

The second annual Mansfield CommUNITY Day brought community members and the city’s police department together from 4 to 8 p.m. for a night of free, family-friendly fun.

The one-of-a-kind event featured food, games and a live DJ. Attendees could partake in cornhole and kickball, as well as visit a variety of bounce houses. Skate Ohio also organized an open skate day at the Liberty Park DIY skate park.

Mansfield police highlighted its local drone team and K9 units to attendees, as well as Richland County’s BearCat armored rescue vehicle.

Saturday’s marquee event took place at 6 p.m. as community members faced off against Mansfield police officers in a basketball game as local youth surrounded the court.

A TV was given away during halftime.

The event was organized by community members Travontae Wilson, John Pavlansky, Chris Durbin and Kye Bowman.

Wilson previously said he was inspired by his son to create the community event.

“If you see a police officer playing your favorite sport wearing basketball gear, I hope that can build respect and trust,” he said during an interview last year.
