MANSFIELD — Take a hot, sunny summer day. Add in a bunch of kids. Wash it down with cold water, courtesy of the Mansfield Fire Department.
The resulting squeals of delight filled North Lake Park on Tuesday afternoon.
That was the plan for the city’s “Operation Stay Cool,” a cooperative effort of the MFD and the Parks & Recreation Department.
Children — and a few adults — got a respite from another 90-degree plus day from 1 to 3 p.m., using the fire department’s ladder truck and two nozzles developed by the department to combat electrical vehicle fires.
It’s a box with holes that allows water to spray upward toward a battery in an EV blaze with specially trimmed pool noodles to cover up metal edges.
Many of the children were participants in the Parks & Recreation Department’s “Summer Fun” program based at North Lake Park this summer.
MFD Chief Dan Crow and Parks & Recreation Supt. Mark Abrams were on hand for the event, as was 5th Ward Councilman Aurelio Diaz.
