Russell “Rusty” Gareth Franklin, Jr., 73, of Galion passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Avita Health System – Galion Hospital.
Rusty was born on August 11, 1951, in Buffalo, New York, to the late Russell and Evelyn (Schaffer) Franklin, Sr. Rusty would join Mary Festa in marriage, and they would share a loving 35 years together. Mary survives him in Galion.
Work was more than just a duty for Rusty—it was a defining part of who he was. For 43 dedicated years, he worked with pride and commitment at General Motors, where his unwavering work ethic earned the respect of many. Rusty believed in giving his best, day in and day out, and took great pride in providing for his family.
Though known for his stubborn streak, Rusty had a heart full of love. He was a devoted husband to Mary, the love of his life, and always made sure she was cared for and cherished. Their bond was unshakable, built on years of shared laughter, challenges, and quiet moments of companionship.
One of Rusty’s favorite places to find peace was the Amann Reservoir Park. There, he could often be found sitting quietly, soaking in the stillness of the water and the calm it brought to his soul.
A passionate sports fan, Rusty cheered faithfully for the Buffalo Bills and the New York Yankees. Whether it was football season or baseball’s opening day, he followed his teams with loyalty and enthusiasm, never missing a chance to watch a game or talk sports with his friends.
In addition to Mary, Rusty’s memories will be cherished by his step-children: May Jo (Dwayne) Gamble of Buffalo, NY., Shelly Stowell of Buffalo, NY., Michael (Fran) Reynolds, Jr. of Linwood, NY., and Chris Reynolds of Akron, NY.; sisters: Sandie (Ben) Idziak of Bedford, TX., and Linda Kadziolka of Buffalo, NY.; grandson: Landen Ruff of Galion; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Rusty was preceded in death by his step-son; Sammy Reynolds.
