NORTH ROBINSON – Pioneer Career & Technology Center, in partnership with Colonel Crawford High School, welcomed a bevy of north central Ohio teams into the water at the 4th annual “Mike Cauley” Cardboard Boat Regatta.

With 59 boats competing and 151 students participating from six high schools, the event successfully showcased the creativity, teamwork, and engineering skills of local students.

The regatta, named in honor of Mike Cauley, continues to grow each year, fostering interest in engineering and design among students.

2025 “Mike Cauley” Cardboard Boat Regatta Results:

Best Engineered Boat: 1st Place – Galion, Boat #8 (Grady Crim, Adalie Flick).

Best Creativity: 1st Place – Lucas, Boat #3 (Guegold & Kendall).

Most Buoyant Boat: 1st Place – Pioneer, Boat #10 (McMillan, Zane Sandlin, James Weaver, Conor) (640 lbs.).

Fastest Times High School: 1st Place – Crestline, Boat #9 (46.7 seconds) (Kordaie and Adam).

“We extend our gratitude to all the students, schools, and individuals who contributed to making this event possible,” organizers stated in a press release.

“A special thank you to Colonel Crawford High School for hosting the event, Lyn Moritz and her media students from Pioneer, Sam Crawford, Sam Jackson, and Camryn Powers for filming the competition (a highlight video capturing the day’s most exciting moments will be released soon), and Dan Slaughter, Pioneer Supervisor, for creating and assisting with the scoring software.”

Organizers also thanked judges, Earnie Mosier, Nick Harvey, and Daniel Ryker from Mansfield Engineering Components, who volunteered their time to make this event a success.

“We sincerely thank Mr. Steve Johnson, Director of Operations at Tavens Packaging Services in Mansfield, for sponsoring this year’s race and generously donating the cardboard used by local Engineering Instructors.

“We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our Pioneer Satellite Engineering Instructors and the local Engineering Instructors, including Austin Strouse (Colonel Crawford), Darien Payne (Crestline), Bruce Weirich (Galion), Scott Spitler (Lucas), JR Santos (Mansfield Christian), and Matt Hanning (Pioneer CTC), for their coordination and support in organizing the event.
