Bonnie Lee Baker was the kind of woman you never forgot. She had a spark in her eye, a mischievous grin, and a sharp wit that kept everyone on their toes. She was as stubborn as she was loyal, as feisty as she was loving, and if she gave you a hard time, that meant she liked you. Bonnie didn’t just laugh with you—she’d laugh at you, just to keep you humble, but always with that twinkle in her eye that let you know it was all in good fun. Whether she was sipping black coffee, sneaking a Snickers bar, or giving a customer at the shop a little friendly ribbing, Bonnie lived life on her own terms—straightforward, full of grit, and always with a whole lot of heart.

On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at the age of 85, Bonnie passed away peacefully in Lexington, Ohio, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on July 22, 1939, in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, Bonnie was the daughter of Louis Rau, Sr. and Ina (Brown) Rau and graduated from Kittanning High School.

Fate—and perhaps a little matchmaking from above—brought Bonnie together with a young Navy man named David A. Baker. She first laid eyes on him while working at a grocery store. While some might say she was just ringing up his groceries, perhaps Bonnie was “checking him out” in more ways than one. The sparks flew, and in true whirlwind romance fashion, the couple was married just eight months later on May 29, 1958. Together, they built a beautiful life in Lexington, Ohio, filled with love, laughter, and caring for their three daughters.

Bonnie and Dave were the proud owners and operators of Steam Corners Sporting Goods and Bake’s Best Shot, where Bonnie wasn’t just selling hunting and fishing supplies—she was fostering a sense of camaraderie among the community. She was the heart and soul of the shop, always ready with a sassy welcome. Over time, they expanded to include a deer checking station and a shooting range, further cementing the store as a hub for local sportsmen and neighbors alike. Bonnie loved the people and the conversations that came with the job, making everyone feel like part of the family.

When she wasn’t running the store, Bonnie enjoyed playing BINGO, crafting intricate bead jewelry, and spending time with animals—especially cats. She had a soft spot for all creatures, big and small, and they always seemed to sense her kindness.

Bonnie was a fiercely devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, leaving behind a family that adored her. She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Dave Baker of Lexington, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law Loretta Fox & Aaron Cummings of Lexington, Ohio, Yvonne & Wayne Ryan of West Virginia and Natalie & Bob Beckert of Florida; grandson and spouse David & René Fox of Shelby, Ohio; great-granddaughter and partner Autumn Fox & Austin Moore of Shelby, Ohio; brother-in-law Paul Baker of Bristolville, Ohio; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

In addition to her parents Louis & Ina Rau, Bonnie was preceded in death by her brother, Louis Rau, Jr.. and sisters-in-law Edith Baker and Theresa Owens.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 31, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Snyder Funeral Homes, Lexington Avenue Chapel, 2553 Lexington Ave, Mansfield, Ohio 44904. A funeral service celebrating Bonnie’s incredible life will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 11:00 am at the same location with Celebrant David Roberts officiating. She will be laid to rest with a traditional burial to follow at Shauck Cemetery near Lexington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Western Reserve, 17876 St Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110.

Bonnie’s love, laughter, and fiery spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched. Whether through a kind word at the shop, a joke over a cup of coffee, or a lucky BINGO card, she made the world brighter for everyone around her and will be missed.
