MANSFIELD — A Shelby man has been indicted on four charges by a Richland County grand jury, including two counts of first-degree felony rape and two counts of third-degree felony gross sexual imposition.
Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher said Caleb Avants, 26, allegedly engaged in sexual conduct and sexual contact with a juvenile over a 24-month period from Jan. 1, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2012.
“This is something that we would classify or relate this as a delayed report,” she said. “This was an incident that’s alleged to have happened from 2011 into 2012. It was just recently reported.”
Schumacher said delayed reports aren’t necessarily uncommon, depending on victims’ situations.
“(The) victim has just kind of been living with this and then finally disclosed, through much investigation,” the prosecutor said. “We believe there was additional corroborating evidence located.”
During the time of the alleged sexual conduct, the alleged victim was younger than 13 years old. Furthermore, Avants was also not an adult during the 24-month period, Schumacher said.
Avants was indicted in September. He is scheduled for a jury trial on Feb. 10 before Judge Brent Robinson.
Explosives found during traffic stop
James Fletcher, 55, of Mount Gilead, was indicted in November on nine charges by a Richland County grand jury, including four counts of illegally manufacturing or possessing explosives, four counts of unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance and one count of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
Schumacher said the incident began as a routine traffic stop on Oct. 13. It resulted in the involvement of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, based on officers’ observations.
“During the course of the (traffic) stop, additional observations were made by officers that resulted in some of our federal partners getting involved,” she said.
“That led to essentially us finding what some of us might call pipe bombs, but definitely explosives being located.”
An additional search of Fletcher’s residence was conducted by law enforcement after the traffic stop, the prosecutor said.
Officers also located firearms inside Fletcher’s vehicle.
If convicted, Schumacher said Fletcher could face a potential prison sentence of around 30-plus years.
