MANSFIELD — Penelope Potts was selected “Student of the Month” when the nonprofit karate school, Music Academy of Karate and Empowerment, had its monthly belt promotion.

“She has quietly worked diligently to be the best student she can be showing perseverance, integrity indomitable spirit, courtesy and self control,” said Reneta Music, executive director of the academy at 44 W. Fourth St.

During the test, each student had an opportunity to perform the kata they were testing for or will be testing for. There are approximately two months between each kata and two months between attendance stripes.

During attendance stripes, the student is learning a new kata or working on perfecting the previous kata. 

The following students were promoted to orange belt: Gavin Cuevas, Christian Cuevas, Ronin Cuevas, Connor Bolen, Kayden Harris and Daviney Winck.

The following were promoted to Red belt: Adam Mandour and Omari Mandour 

The Music Academy of Karate and Empowerment offers classes for children ages 4-5 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and classes for children 6 and up on the same days at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The academy also offers adult classes on Monday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. The basic class fee begins at $65 per month with scholarships available for those in need.
