EDITOR’S NOTE: This opinion piece was originally published as an email the morning after election day by Jay Allred, the CEO and publisher of Source Media Properties.
It’s the day after Election Day. Here’s all of our local and regional coverage.
Thanks to the thousands of readers, listeners and watchers who trusted us to cover this election. In the past two weeks alone, our reporters and editors have published 47(!) stories which reached over 20,000 readers. In local elections, that’s a lot. I hope we helped you make an informed decision.
Moving ahead
It’s certain there are people I’ll see today who are disappointed; maybe even angry or upset. Perhaps you know folks who are in that boat, too. Maybe you’re seated right alongside them.
That last part of the sentence, “… seated right alongside them,” is what I’m getting at.
Here in the real world, we don’t walk our kids to school on Democrat streets or have heart surgery in Republican hospitals.
Instead, we live and move among decent, trustworthy people who vote differently than we do. Think differently. Worship differently. Look differently. Love differently.
Many of these folks … we call them our friends.
When all the yard signs come down and the voting machines get put away, the work will remain. No matter how we voted, we still have to work together to build the best future we can for our cities and towns and villages and families.
With that in mind, I think maybe the next few days are ripe for kindness. A quiet conversation. A quick text to check in with a friend or relative. A shared meal. Some time raking leaves with a neighbor.
Little actions that reaffirm the human connection we all share matter a lot on days like today.
Thanks again for letting us help you make informed decisions. Hope to see you in the real world.
