LEXINGTON — Ohio Social Sports has launched a new initiative providing free pickleball lessons for seniors at the Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington.

This community-based program is designed for seniors aged 60 and above who are residents of Richland County and focuses on fostering physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being.

The lessons are conducted by expert certified instructor Suzanne Bernstein, an IPTPA and PPT certified and professional pickleball player from Columbus.

Spots filled up in the first 24 hours, but if you wish to be added to the waitlist, sign up directly with Gui Alves to participate.

This program is supported and funded by the Richland County Senior Services Levy, administered by the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc.

The lessons are a key part of Ohio Social Sports’ Senior Pickleball Training Program, which aims to address the growing issue of social isolation among older adults by offering an engaging and structured approach to physical fitness and social connection.

About the program

Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness and social isolation due to factors such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and hearing loss.

Recognizing the serious impact this can have on their mental and physical health, Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging is providing grant funding through the Richland County Senior Services Levy.

These grants aim to support programs that offer innovative and effective ways to connect seniors in group settings and reduce social isolation.

“We are thrilled to offer such a high-quality program for seniors in Richland County,” said Gui Alves, owner and operator of Ohio Social Sports. “Pickleball is a fun and easy-to-learn sport and a fantastic way to bring people together.

“It’s an honor to provide a space where seniors can stay active, connect with others, and experience the joy of learning something new. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their health and well-being.”

Pickleball allows players of all ages to remain active, as shown here at Lakewood Racquet Club.

The Ohio Social Sports Senior Pickleball Training Program addresses this need by offering weekly pickleball lessons, social events, and tournaments. This program gives seniors a fun and supportive way to stay active and meet new people.

Research shows that regular exercise and social interaction improve health and mental well-being, particularly for seniors. Pickleball, a low-impact and enjoyable sport, provides the perfect platform for these goals.

The program will create a welcoming and inclusive environment where seniors can develop lasting friendships, share experiences, and foster a sense of community.

By maintaining a consistent schedule of activities, participants will have regular opportunities to engage with peers and build strong social networks, helping to combat the harmful effects of isolation.
