NEW PHILADELPHIA — Mansfield Senior’s first football win of the season came in dramatic fashion.
Senior Ny Petty fired a 20-yard touchdown pass to Guy Trader and Griffen DeBolt’s PAT was the game-winner as the Tygers nipped New Philadelphia 20-19 in overtime at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium on Friday night.
That concluded a tense, see-saw affair featuring tough defense and crucial special-teams play.
The Tygers (1-4 overall, 1-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference) punched through first by taking advantage of a shanked punt deep in the hosts’ territory. A couple of plays later, Isaiah Darson shook loose for a 9-yard scoring dash. DeBolt’s PAT made it 7-0 with 10:00 showing in the second quarter.
New Philadelphia quickly responded on a 5-yard touchdown run by Kolston Fox. The ensuing PAT knotted the score at 7-7 with 5:51 to play in the half.
The Quakers (2-3, 1-2) took the lead just before intermission when Carson Long picked off an interception and went all the way for a 30-yard TD to make it 13-7 with just 55 seconds flashing on the second-period clock.
Late in the third quarter, another short punt set coach Chioke Bradley’s bunch up at midfield. Senior High capitalized as Ryan Au squirted in on a 12-yard jaunt with 11:01 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the PAT was blocked, leaving the game leveled at 13 apiece.
It stayed that way throughout regulation to send the game to overtime.
New Philadelphia scored first when Quakers’ quarterback Keaton Fausel rolled in on third-and-goal from the 7-yard line. But again the PAT was missed, leaving the door open — and Senior High busted through on its possession.
The Tygers return to action on Friday night at home against Lexington.
New Philadelphia travels to Linsly, W.Va. next week.
