SHELBY — A new piece of playground equipment is coming to Seltzer Park.

The Shelby Park Board gathered for a special meeting Friday morning to decide between three playground piece options.

Three quotes were provided by two equipment suppliers — Snider Recreation Inc. and Midstates Recreation.

Snider Recreation, based in North Royalton, shared two quotes for two different pieces of playground equipment.

Board members reviewed all three options and ultimately voted to approve the purchase of new equipment from Snider Recreation.

The new playground piece — know as the Synergy SY-3194 — includes opportunities for children to run, climb, slide and explore.

Project costs, including equipment, shipping, wood fiber surfacing, installation and removal/disposal of existing equipment, were quoted at $49,904.

Dave Downs, at-large board member, said initial funding for the project will come from the board’s budget — but hopes to defray some of the costs via grants, donations and fundraising.

New equipment expected by late August, early September

Several pieces of Seltzer Park playground equipment haven’t been upgraded since 1965.

In April, board members began discussing what it would take to bring a new playground set to the area just off Parkwood Drive — not to be confused with the Playscape near Bradley Avenue.

The newly purchased equipment is estimated to be installed between late August and early September.

Board members discussed color options for the new playground set, favoring a combination of red, gray and granite.

Of the three options, board members agreed the Synergy model provided the most features and space for children to use.

Park board seeks to increase equipment accessibility

Dave Keinath, Ward 3 board member, discussed adding further pieces of accessible, ADA-compliant equipment to Seltzer Park.

Keinath said several local parents have expressed interest in seeing accessible equipment available at the park for their children.

“We’re going to address some accessibility in the parks. I think that’s fair and right to do,” Keinath said.

Board members agreed Friday’s approved purchase is the start of improvements they’d like to bring to the park and hope to complement it with accessible pieces of equipment.

The next regular Shelby Park Board meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 8. Meetings take place at the 5 Water St. conference room in downtown Shelby.
