Carol Jean Ludwig, age 85, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Brethren Care Village in Ashland.

She was born September 24, 1938, in Bedford, Ohio, to the late Frank J. and Kathryn E. (Visker) Mayer. She loved the Lord and was active in committees on the churches she attended including Mayflower Congregational and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. When she was younger, she worked for her father’s pharmacy, Mayer Drug Store. She also worked at Snyder Bakery, H.L. Reed Department Store and as a cafeteria worker at Madison Schools. She retired from McDonald’s where she worked as a hostess.

Carol enjoyed walking in parks, fairs, and festivals. She enjoyed gardening, walking hand in hand with her husband, Harold, checking on the progress of her gardens and seeing what damage the deer and rabbits had done. She also canned and froze the produce she grew. She found joy in listening to her son, Tim, play the organ. Carol enjoyed the outdoors whether it was cutting the grass on her tractor or planting her gardens. Doing outdoor activities with her family—camping, riding bikes, fishing and canoeing—were some of her pastimes.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harold Ludwig; two sons, Tim Ludwig of Mansfield and John Ludwig of Minnesota; a sister, Sue (Larry) Davis; brother, Wes (Karen) Mayer; a sister-in-law, Kathy Mayer; and numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Kathy (Tom) Emig; and two brothers, Frank and Tom Mayer.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Wappner Funeral Directors-Ontario, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Paul Lintern officiating. She will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to First English Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
