MANSFIELD — Lt. Michael Napier has had many different roles during his 18 years at the Mansfield Police Department.

On Thursday, the 40-year-old Napier will take on another new one when he is sworn in as the department’s new assistant chief.

The selection was announced Monday evening by Mayor Jodie Perry and police Chief Jason Bammann.

Napier will be sworn in Thursday at 1 p.m. in City Council chambers on the third floor of the Municipal Building.

Napier will replace Bammann in the department’s No. 2 slot.

Bammann was promoted to chief in March to replace Keith Porch, who Perry selected as the city’s safety service director when she took office in January.

The mayor said she accepted Bammann’s recommendation to promote Napier.

“I did have a good conversation with the lieutenant last week. He has a strong history with the department,” Perry said.

“A lot of the work he has been doing the last three years in terms of administration, grant (writing) and officer recruitment … those are a lot of the skills we need at the assistant chief position.”

Napier began his law enforcement career with the department in December 2006 in the community services bureau patrol section.

He was promoted to sergeant in July 2015. He remained assigned to patrol until being reassigned to the detective section.

Upon his promotion to lieutenant in June 2017, Napier was assigned to the Office of Professional Standards in the Special Operations Bureau.

He currently serves as a recruitment and training supervisor coordinator, and serves on the range and SWAT teams.

Napier, an Ontario native and Ontario High School graduate, was chosen as the department’s “Supervisor of the Year” in 2019.

Then-Capt. Shari Robertson said at the time, “(Napier) has completely engrossed himself in his new assignment and has taken on numerous assignments that require a high level of attention and detail to complete.”
