MANSFIELD — Ohio Social Sports is diving into a new sports league this spring with sand volleyball.

“It’s the perfect opportunity for friends, families, and coworkers to come together, enjoy some sunshine, and play the sport they love,” said Gui Alves, founder and owner of Ohio Social Sports.

The 9-week league will begin May 7 at the Mansfield YMCA. Participants have the option of signing up for a competitive/ advanced division or a recreational/ novice division.

“When people are serving hit after hit, a team who maybe hasn’t played volleyball in a while isn’t going to have fun with a blowout,” Alves said. “So I wanted to create those different leagues so everyone could get exercise and still have fun.”

The leagues will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday nights May 7–June 25. Playoff games will be July 2. Participants must be at least 18 years old and sign a liability waiver.

Interested participants can sign up as a team, with friends or as individuals to be paired in teams of six. Up to 7 teams can play in the sand volleyball league in each division. At least one male player and one female player is required on all teams, with a minimum of four players at each game.

Registration for sand volleyball is open through April 30. Fees are $65, which include a game a week, a dri fit team T-shirt, team and game photos.

“If somebody has to miss a week, you can borrow from teams who are already registered,” Alves said. “I’m hoping to find businesses to sponsor the shirts to offset those costs a bit, or restaurants to offer appetizers or drinks to the winning teams.”

Dodgeball tournament scheduled for May 18

Ohio Social Sports has also scheduled a spring dodgeball tournament for May 18 at the Mansfield YMCA.

Participants can sign up as individuals or small groups. Teams of 8 will compete in the showdown that will include five games, one each hour from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Registration is $35 per person and participants must be at least 18 years old.

A business tournament for teams sponsored by businesses will also be at the Mansfield Y Saturday night beginning at 3 p.m. Registration for full teams is $350.

“Our Dodgeball Tournament should be a crowd favorite,” said Alves, “It’s a fantastic way for businesses to engage in friendly competition while promoting team spirit and camaraderie among employees.”

Alves is also organizing a senior pickleball tournament for ages 50+ in August.
