LEXINGTON — Ellie Powell may not have struck it as well as she would have liked, but it was enough.

Powell scored the game-winning goal less than a minute into overtime as third-seeded Madison stunned No. 1 Ontario 1-0 in a Division III district semifinal girls soccer match Tuesday at Lexington.

The Rams (11-8) will play Bowling Green for a district title at 6 p.m. Thursday at Millbury Lake High School. Bowling Green beat Toledo Central Catholic 7-0 Tuesday.

The match was scoreless through 80 minutes of regulation before Powell struck.

The Warriors (15-2-2) failed to clear the ball from in front of their own box and Powell ran down the ball directly in front of the goal. She dribbled once to the left then reversed her field and hit a right-footed shot that ticked off Ontario goalkeeper Emma Folge’s outstretched hand and into the upper right corner of the goal.

“I touched it, then touched it back because I wanted it on my right,” Powell said. “I shot it and did not think it was going in. It went in and then I couldn’t hear anything else.”

Defense

Ontario had 13 shots on goal compared to just five for the Rams, but couldn’t get a shot past Madison keeper Caliyah Clapper. The All-Ohio softball player made several saves in what was one of her best performances of the season.

“We didn’t want our seniors’ last game to be tonight,” said Clapper, a junior. “We’ve been working for this and it all just showed out on the field.”

Clapper had plenty of help from her defense.

“I can’t even express how hard our defense played,” first-year coach Rob Kershner said. “Our defense played light’s-out. I’m speechless.”

Turning the Tables

Ontario beat Madison 2-0 on Aug. 25.

“We avenged a 2-0 loss and it feels good,” Kershner said. “Any time you can beat a quality team like that … they were the No. 1 seed. They’re awesome.”

So what was the biggest difference between the regular-season meeting and Tuesday?

“I’m a different coach than I was then,” Kershner said. “The team and myself have grown.”

Streak Snapped

Ontario had reached the district championship game 17 straight years before being ousted in the semifinals Tuesday. The last time The Warriors didn’t reach a district final was 2008.

Ontario won a district crown and reached the regional final last year, but lost a wealth of talent to graduation.

“For what we graduated last year, to be in this situation and have the year we’ve had, we’re very grateful,” longtime Ontario coach Larry Atkinson said. “We’re very proud of that.”
