ONTARIO: “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” (John 15:9) Bob Currens lived to share the love of Christ. As a child brought up by the “system” he didn’t see the world as a child raised on survival, but as a child raised on love, because he was raised with the love of his Savior.
Robert William “Bob” Currens passed away Sunday, October 22, 2023 at home surrounded by his family.
He was born July 21, 1950 in Norwalk, and was raised by adoptive parents Lester and Anna (McKenna) Currens. Bob graduated from Malabar High School in 1968, where he ran cross country and track. He earned his associates degree from The Ohio State University Mansfield Branch in business and retail management.
While attending school, Bob worked in retail at Lazarus, there he encountered Kimela Anderson, who caught his special attention shopping with her mother. Unable to erase her from her from his thoughts, he found her phone number and called her up for a date. Bob and Kim were married October 2, 1971.
Bob worked 24 years at AK Steel and later opened his own interior/exterior painting business, BC Painting that he ran for over 20 years. Bob also served as Springfield Township Trustee for four terms.
A lifelong member of Global Methodist Church (formerly Main Street United Methodist) Bob was active as a trustee, on the administrative board, Sunday school teacher and youth fellowship advisor.
Community involvement was important to Bob, especially those organizations that supported his sons. He was a member of the Ontario Lions Club and served as Chaplain, Cub Scout volunteer, advisor for the Blue-Gold 4-H Club, and coached youth baseball for 10 years. He loved sports including Ohio State football, basketball and Cleveland Indians baseball; however, track and field was his passion. Bob was excited to attend the U.S. Olympic field trials, but was most happy watching his son’s track meets.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting (pheasant and deer) and fishing (pike and walleye) and mushroom hunting. His happy place was in Canada on fishing trips, and spending time at the Richland County Fish and Game Club. He and Kim shared a love for gardening. They put out a huge garden annually growing a variety of vegetables. He supported Kim in her canning business distributing KC Mix at craft bazaars, markets and stores.
Most of all, Bob was man blessed with the gift of finding the good in others. Kind, loving, compassionate, and caring he will be remembered as a humanitarian for Christ. He possessed the special gift of seeing beyond a person’s circumstance or crime, to the heart and soul of his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kim Currens, sons and daughters-in law Chris and Kristen Currens of Brush Prairie, Washington and Matt and Christine Currens of Whitehouse, Ohio; three precious grandchildren Katelyn Currens, Linnea Currens and Spencer Currens; siblings Betty Vogus, Patty Vogus and Nancy Bowman; sister-in-law Jean Denig; niece Jill Grundhoefer, his beloved cocker spaniel, Bailey, whom he loved taking on walks, and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two brothers Robert Denig and Les Currens.
Friends may call Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 4-7 pm in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 am in Mansfield Cemetery. Long-time pastor and friend of the family, J.R. Harvey will officiate.
Memorial donations in honor of Bob may be made to Life Care Hospice or Main Global Church.
