Dr. Charles Valloyd (Chuck) Adair passed away on August 31, 2023 at Kingston of Ashland, where he received excellent care following hip surgery in July. Chuck, son of Dr. Waite and Ella Robertson Adair, celebrated his 100th birthday on April 20, 2023. He was born and raised in Lorain, Ohio, the third of three brothers, all of whom became physicians, like their father.

Chuck graduated cum laude from Hobart College in Geneva New York in 1943, where he met his future bride, Constance (Connie) Campbell Dean. They were married in the Hobart Chapel on April 1, 1944. As newlyweds, the couple set up housekeeping in Cleveland, Ohio, where Chuck, then a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, attended Western Reserve Medical School, graduating in 1947. He completed his internship and residency at Rochester (NY) General Hospital in 1949 and was a fellow in infectious diseases at Syracuse University Hospital until 1951, when he began service as a Captain in the Army at Walter Reed Army Medical School, conducting medical research.

Chuck, Connie and their young sons, Allen and Dick, moved to Mansfield in 1953 where Chuck entered medical practice with his brother, Dr. Donald R. Adair. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1955 and elected as a Fellow in the American College of Physicians (FACP) in 1968.

Over the years Chuck served the community as a member and past president of Mansfield Memorial Homes Board of Trustees; past president of the Active Medical Staff, Mansfield General Hospital; YMCA Board of Trustees; and Mansfield Board of Health. He was a member of Mansfield Rotary Club; Richland County, Ohio, and American Medical Associations, Westbrook Country Club and Our Club. He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon.

In 1985 Chuck retired from medical practice and he and Connie began dividing their time between Mansfield and their second home on Sanibel Island, Florida, where they enjoyed hosting their children and grandchildren, until Connie passed away in 2013.

Two years ago Chuck was delighted to attend an Adair family reunion, hosted by Pat Adair, widow of his nephew Brian Adair. As the last living member of his generation, he was the patriarch at the event and relished the opportunity to connect with the families of his brothers, Donald and Robert. He found great joy in sharing family stories and history with his niece and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.

Chuck was a kind, caring, thoughtful man, who excelled as a loving father and grandfather. He will be missed by his son Dick (Joyce) Adair, daughter-in-law, Cheryl Adair, grandchildren, Michael (Megan) Adair, Betsy Adair, Ken (Elizabeth) Adair, and Jeff (Stacy) Adair and great-grandchildren James, Abigail, Nathan, and Benjamin. In addition to his wife, parents, and brothers, he was preceded in death by his son Allen V. Adair and granddaughter, Jennifer Adair Morgan.

During his final five years, Chuck made his home at Wedgewood Estates. He often expressed his gratitude for the caring staff and for the friendships forged during his time there. His family joins him in expressing their appreciation.

Inurnment will be in the columbarium at First Congregational Church, with a private family service. Memorial Gifts may be made to the church.
