MANSFIELD — Mansfield Senior’s Elias Owens poured in a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to fuel a convincing 57-42 Ohio Cardinal Conference victory over Mount Vernon on Friday night at Pete Henry Gym.
Owens led nine Tygers in the scoring column, but Nathaniel Haney’s 11 points represented the only other double-digit offensive performer. Jakob Legron and Kyevi Roane chipped in eight points apiece.
Hudson Rohler’s 12 points topped the Yellow Jackets, while Caden Rowland and Trevor Buttke collected 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Mansfield Senior (9-5 overall, 6-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference) roared to a 19-9 first-quarter lead before Mount Vernon closed to within 28-21 at halftime. Senior High opened its biggest lead, 42-25 in the third period, before the Jackets ended the frame on a 7-0 burst.
But coach Marquis Sykes’ squad controlled the fourth quarter by a 15-11 margin to win comfortably. The Tygers dominated the glass with a 32-18 rebounding bulge and made nearly 50 percent of their field goals (22 of 45).
Mount Vernon (6-8, 4-4) was limited to 12-of-42 shooting, including just 4-of-15 inside the arc.
Mansfield Senior plays at West Holmes on Tuesday in OCC play.
The Yellow Jackets host Wooster on Tuesday in OCC action.
