Then & Now: Engwiller's 1895

If you go to this address today — on Main Street just a few doors north of Fourth — you’ll find a classy little art gallery. But if you had visited the same building 100 years ago, you would have been at the storefront of Samuel Engwiller, who was a jeweler and an optician.

Back then it was “The Home of the Engwiller Watch,” as was certainly evident from the grand timepiece that hung above the door.

You might get all the jewels in your pocket watch tuned up there, or browse the cases for jewelry.

Engwiller's then, Artspace now.

In the same place today, the Artspace gallery shows 75 artists, all from Ohio, and — as if in fulfillment of a century of promise — many of these artworks are indeed true jewels.
