Carey’s defense earns skin-tight win over Col. Crawford in N10 game of the year

NORTH ROBINSON — The Northern 10 game of the year turned out to be the defensive game of the year, too.

Unfortunately for Colonel Crawford, Carey’s defense was just a little bit better in a 7-3 victory over the Eagles at H.J. Gary Field.

The battle of unbeaten teams led to very little scoring, but very high drama.

Colonel Crawford took a 3-0 edge over the Blue Devils on Braxton Morton’s 37-yard field goal in the second period. That lead carried into halftime.

But Carey surged in front on its only score of the game, Lance Rickle’s 36-yard touchdown pass in the third period. That finished the scoring, and clinched the game as neither squad managed another point in the tight tilt.

Rickle was the star of the game, hitting 7-of-10 passes for 117 yards — big numbers for a contest with very little offense. He also ran for 26 yards.

Colonel Crawford quarterback Kamryn Lohr completed 8-of-20 passes for 67 yards and suffered an interception. He also ran for a game-high 55 yards.

The Blue Devils got the best of the statistical battle. Carey posted 101 yards rushing, 117 yards passing, and 218 total yards. C.C. was held to just 52 yards rushing, 67 yards passing and 119 total yards. Colonel Crawford managed an 11-10 edge in first downs, but allowed the Blue Devils to convert 4-of-6 fourth-down situations.

Colonel Crawford was crippled by 7 penalties for 89 yards, while Carey had 6 for 41 yards. Both teams suffered a pair of turnovers.

The Eagles fall to 5-1 overall, 2-1 in the Northern 10. C.C. hosts Upper Sandusky on Friday night.

The Blue Devils improve to 6-0, 3-0. Carey travels to Mohawk next week.
