SHELBY — Ambrose Metzger was a well-known farmer in the Richland County area who died last year, but is not forgotten.

Metzger was a farmer his whole life. He was born on a farm on Stentz Road near Shelby, where his family farmed 113 acres of ground.

The first tractor that he bought was in the late 1940s. It was a Farmall H and it cost $480.

Ambrose made a name for himself and his family as his farm grew and his love for farming never wavered.

Sadly, Ambrose passed away last year. In September, a volunteer corn stalk grew next to his gravesite.

The family was amazed to see the corn and cherished the thought that Ambrose was still close to his crops.

This year the family found a large Sprite soda can on the tombstone. They don’t know how it was put there at the gravesite but believe it must have been a friend who knew Ambrose only drank Sprite and it was a remembrance or tribute to him.

Everyone knew Ambrose and honored him as a true farmer who loved his farming life.
