MADISON TOWNSHIP — This year’s topsy-turvy Ohio Cardinal Conference boys basketball season confirmed its craziness on Tuesday night.

Madison overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half and survived a couple of last-second shots to edge Lexington 43-42 in an OCC clash at Madison Middle School.

The Minutemen (10-5 overall, 5-3 in the OCC) sat atop the league standings coming into this game, but have now lost three straight.

Coach Scott Hamilton’s squad jumped on top 12-4 in the first quarter, but the Rams whittled the lead to 19-17 at halftime.

Madison pulled in front 32-31 heading to the final eight minutes, and hung on for the win in the fourth quarter.

The white-hot Rams, who have won seven of their last eight games, were led by Jayden Jeffries, who had 13 points and six rebounds. Levi Zehner added 12 points on three treys, while Ethan Spillman scored eight points.

Madison (9-5, 3-4) hit 8-of-17 treys, and needed that kind of shooting to overcome a 5-of-13 showing at the free throw line.

Hudson Moore topped Lex with 12 points, while Cayden Eichler contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Braden Forup chipped in eight points.

Lexington controlled the glass with a 28-19 rebounding edge, but Madison took better care of the basketball, forcing 16 turnovers and committing just 11 themselves.

The Rams play at Ashland on Friday night. Lexington travels to Tiffin Columbian on Saturday night.
