MANSFIELD — OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital has been honored nationally for its environmental conservation efforts, earning two major sustainability honors from the American Society for Health Care Engineering.
The American Hospital Association personal membership group awarded the facility both the Sustainability Champions Award and the Sustained Performance Award through its Energy to Care program.
The Sustainability Champions Award represents the program’s highest distinction. Mansfield Hospital is among 70 facilities nationwide to earn the honor in 2026, placing it in the top 1.4% of all participating health care sites.
Qualifying facilities must track energy, water, and emissions, maintain an Energy Star score of 75 or higher, publish a sustainability statement, and employ dedicated sustainability staff.
“By earning this award, OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to reducing healthcare’s environmental footprint,” said Austin Wallace, sustainability senior specialist at ASHE.
“This achievement distinguishes Mansfield Hospital as an example among healthcare facilities working to build healthier communities.”
The hospital was also among 328 facilities—representing 6.6% of participants—to earn the Sustained Performance Award, which recognizes previous winners that maintain or improve their conservation metrics over time.
Officials credited several infrastructure improvements for the reductions, including:
- Optimization of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
- Enhancements to facility control sequences
- Revised equipment operation schedules
Since launching in 2006, the Energy to Care program has grown to include more than 4,900 facilities. ASHE estimates participating hospitals have saved a combined $550 million in utility costs over the past two decades, allowing systems to redirect those funds directly into patient care.
