MANSFIELD — ShotSpotter was on the scene of a shooting Tuesday evening, according to Mansfield police, an incident that resulted in the wounding of a teenage male.
Patrol officers responded to the area in the 300 block of Wood Street at 9:11 p.m. based on the report from the sound-recognizing technology that shots had been fired in the area.
“Once at that location, a citizen advised that suspects in a black Durango and other subjects in a silver Jeep Patriot had been shooting at each other in the roadway,” Mansfield police Capt. Shari Robertson said Wednesday afternoon.
The city began a year-long test of the ShotSpotter technology in March 2021 in a one-square mile area of the city.
The system uses acoustic sensors on buildings and light poles and provides a specific location and an audio recording of the incident in less than a minute, allowing officers to more quickly close in on the site.
Officers found the Jeep in in the 200 block of Wood Street. It was unoccupied, but the doors were open. The Durango had fled the scene.
“The Jeep had been struck several times by gunfire and blood was located inside the (vehicle’s) driver’s side area,” Robertson said, adding that about 15 bullet casings were collected from the road, as well as a bullet that struck a nearby residence.
The captain said officers were advised the subjects in the Jeep had fled on foot.
“A short time later, officers were advised a male juvenile had shown up at OhioHealth (Mansfield Hospital) ER suffering from a non-threatening injury believed to be gun related,” Robertson said.
Officers contacted the victim and he advised he was driving the Jeep at the time of the shooting.
“He advised he was shot by an unknown person in another vehicle for unknown reasons, but refused to give additional information about the incident,” the captain said.
“At this time, no other shooting victims were located and the suspects remain at large,” Robertson said.
