MANSFIELD — There were 12 Richland County townships that had contested races in the Nov. 2 election, with 25 seats up for grabs between 42 candidates.

According to the Ohio Township Association, these dozen contested township races are just 12 of 1,308 townships in Ohio varying in population size, annual operating budget, and range of services delivered to residents.

Ohio townships most commonly provide residents with services such as road maintenance, cemetery management, police and fire protection, emergency medical services, solid waste disposal, and zoning — all issues at the center of the candidates’ campaigns.

Ohio townships also have direct responsibility for maintaining 41,000 miles of roads and streets, and townships manage more than 2,400 cemeteries across the state.

Every other year, half of the township officials are up for election, and are elected to four-year terms.
