Unbeaten Lucas maintains top spot in regional computer ratings

LUCAS — The Cubs tightened their stranglehold on Region 25’s top spot.

Lucas maintained the top spot in this week’s regional computer ratings thanks to last week’s impressive 35-27 win over previously unbeaten Division II Lakewood. The undefeated Cubs (5-0) have 9.45 points, the second highest among Division VII schools in Ohio.

Marion Local, which beat Lucas in the 2019 Division VII state championship game, is the highest rated Division VII school with 10.2606 points. The Flyers are the top-rated school in Division VII’s Region 28.

Lucas held a scant .2 lead over No. 2 Norwalk St. Paul in last week’s computer ratings, the first official ratings released by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. The Cubs now have 1.8724 point advantage over No. 2 Independence, which leap-frogged St. Paul.

The top 16 teams in each region qualify for the playoffs.

The Cubs took last week’s game on short notice after Cincinnati Western Hills had to cancel. Lucas didn’t find out it was playing Lakewood until Wednesday afternoon — less than two days before kickoff.

“A lot of people will say why do you play these (bigger) teams? Number one, I didn’t want my seniors not to have a game this week,” Spitler said. “You’re not promised next week. We really didn’t have a lot of time for preparation, which I think favors us, because it’s hard to simulate what we do.”

Plymouth (3-2) slipped from sixth to ninth in Region 25 after last week’s 35-22 loss to Western Reserve. The Big Red have 4.05 points.

Mansfield Senior (3-2) dropped its second consecutive game last week but remained comfortably in playoff position in Region 10 of Division III. The Tygers, who fell 40-27 at Tiffin Columbian, are fifth with 7.5 points. Lexington (2-3)is 13th in Region 10 with 3.75 points.

In Division IV, Region 14, Clear Fork, Shelby and Galion all are in playoff position. The Colts (3-2) are ninth with 6.9 points after last week’s 41-19 win over Division III River Valley. The Whippets (4-1) are 10th after last week’s 49-14 win over Marion Pleasant with 6.7531 points. The Tigers (3-2) fell to Marion Harding 24-15 but are 11th in Region 14 with 5.55 points.

North central Ohio’s lone Division V team, Wynford, is 12th in the Region 18 ratings. The Royals are 3-2 after last week’s 70-8 win over Buckeye Central, the second straight week Wynford has scored at least 70 points.

In Division VI, Region 21, Hillsdale is clinging to the 15th spot with 2.591 points. The Falcons (2-3) fell to Wayne County Athletic League heavyweight Norwayne 42-7 last week.

In Region 22 of Division VI, undefeated Crestview (5-0) is second with 8.15 points. The Cougars host Toledo Ottawa Hills (4-1) is a game rife with Region 22 implications. Ottawa Hills is 14th in this week’s regional ratings with 3.95 points.

Also in Region 22, Colonel Crawford (4-1) is ninth with 5.6232 points. The Eagles host Crawford County rival Wynford on Friday with the winner picking up a windfall of points.
