SHELBY — Marshall Shepherd put an exclamation point on a historic junior year.
The Richland Source Baseball Player of the Year, Shepherd helped the Whippets win a share of the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference crown this spring. Shelby was 21-2 and shared the MOAC title with Ontario.
Shepherd, who was selected the MOAC Player of the Year, was a central figure in three conference crowns for the Whippets during the 2020-21 school year. He was quarterback of the football team that won the MOAC title outright and reached the regional finals. In winter he was a regular on the MOAC-championship basketball team that won a district title for the first time since 1999.
On the diamond, Shepherd ranked second in the MOAC in batting average (.459) and led the league in hits (39) and runs batted in (36). He was just as valuable on the mound, where he compiled a 6-0 record with a conference-leading 60 strikeouts and a 1.69 earned run average.
Shepherd earned a spot on the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Ohio second team in Division II. He is one of eight All-Ohioans on the All-Richland Source team.
Catcher
Chase Carter, Lexington: An Ashland University recruit, Carter was one of two catchers selected to the All-Ohio first team in Division II. He batted .463 with five home runs and 22 runs batted in. Carter had eight doubles among his 38 base hits and scored 21 runs, earning District 9 Player of the Year honors in Division II.
First Base
Ty Williams, Hillsdale: A senior who will play football at Division II Hillsdale (Michigan) College, Williams was the lone holdover from Hillsdale’s 2019 Division IV state runner-up team. He batted .459 with nine homers, 12 doubles and 35 RBIs, earning a spot on the All-Ohio first team in Division IV.
Second Base
Caden Parsons, Crestline: A senior, Parsons was selected the Mid-Buckeye Conference Player of the Year after batting .522 with five home runs, eight doubles and 31 RBIs. Parsons earned a spot on the District 9 first team in Division IV.
Third Base

The junior was the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading the league in hits (39) and runs batted in (36). As a pitcher he was 6-0 with a 1.69 ERA and a conference-leading 60 strikeouts.
Shortstop
Cade Hamilton, Colonel Crawford: The Northern 10 Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Hamilton led the Eagles to a perfect 16-0 mark in N10 play. Colonel Crawford was 26-3 overall and reached the district championship game. Hamilton batted .493 with five home runs and 33 RBIs, earning a spot on the All-Ohio first team in Division III.
Utility
Blaine Bowman, Shelby: The junior was a Division II All-Ohio second-team pick at catcher after hitting .446 with three home runs and 25 RBIs. As a pitcher he was 6-0 with 46 strikeouts and a 2.31 earned run average. Bowman was a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference first-team choise as well as a first-team selection in Division II on the District 9 team.
Outfield
Cody Taylor, Wynford: A senior, Taylor led the Northern 10 Athletic Conference with a .513 batting average. He also scored 37 runs and stole 15 bases as the Royals finished third in the N10 at 10-6. Taylor was selected to the All-Ohio first team in Division III and was a District 9 first-team pick in Division III.
Owen Hatfield, Ontario: A senior, Hatfield was the straw that stirred the drink for the Warriors. He batted .344, scored a team-high 26 runs and led the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference with 25 stolen bases as Ontario shared the league crown with Shelby. Hatfield was a MOAC first-team selection and a District 9 honorable-mention choice in Division II.
Brody Symsick, Galion: A junior, Symsick was one of the most productive offensive players in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference. He led the MOAC with a .485 batting average and a .573 on-base percentage, while knocking in 24 runs. Symsick was a District 9 second-team pick in Division II.
Owen Barker, Crestview: Just a sophomore, Barker earned a spot on the District 9 first team in Division III after hitting .398 with 30 RBIs and 26 runs scored. Barker was a Firelands Conference first-team selection.
Designated Hitter
Marek Albert, Shelby: The Whippets shared the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference title with Ontario thanks in no small part to Albert. The University of Charleston (West Virginia) football recruit was an All-Ohio first-team choice after batting .446 with four homers and 26 RBIs.
